brush cleaning i found and bought a beautiful antique brass brush and mirror recently, and i realized when i got it that i had no idea what the bristles of the brush are made from, or how to sanitize it before use. i don't use ammonia or bleach at my house, but i need to make sure this brush is clean before i start using it. The bristles look and feel something near to boar-bristle, except that they are clear-ish in nature and slightly stiffer. i assume it's some form of synthetic, but i'm completely unsure here because they look like no bristles i've ever seen before. At any rate, they seem to feel nice, and i'd like to try using the brush in addition to my usual boar-bristle one. How do i sanitize my new/antique brush? Thank you for your help! :)

ultrasounds and other questions about going to the doctor I've spent my entire pregnancy outside of the U.S. Now I am seeing an American ObGyn and I had some questions for the group:
1. When can I expect (if at all) to get another ultrasound? I had one at 5 weeks, 12 weeks and 20 weeks. But what's the standard American schedule?
2. Every time I visit, they do a urine sample. That didn't happen in the other country. Is this the norm? Should I not pee before I go to an appointment?
3. When I showed up, the receptionist told me that the doctor had to go to the hospital to deliver a baby and rescheduled me for later in the day. Obviously this happens, but it is going to get a lot more complicated for me once school starts in a month and I have a very strict schedule. How normal/usual is this rescheduling stuff?
Thanks all!

Mouthwash i'm scared to death of vomiting, and i was very excited to make my own mouthwash with peroxide and water, until i learned that if you accidentally swallow any, it will make you vomit like crazy.
i would really rather not take that chance. (although i've never swallowed mouthwash in the past)
But i need a mouthwash that i can make at home that has some serious cleansing and inflammation reducing power. i'm working with my dentist to get my mouth into much better shape, but i want to do all i can at home, as naturally as i can, to help that process along.
What, if anything, can i use in my own mouthwash that works as well as peroxide without the vomit factor? If i go ahead and use peroxide, and at some point accidentally swallow some, will the illness it causes stop quickly, or what? Will i need to call poison control, or is it no big deal?
Sorry to ask such odd questions, and i know my concern may seem silly, but for me, it matters. Thank you very much for your help.

sprouts I'd like to start sprouting beans and have a couple questions...
Can I just buy regular beans at the store and start those or do they have to be a certain kind? Do I keep them in sunlight? Anyone have any good recipes for sprouting your own beans? Favorite kinds to sprout?
Thanks!

Refilling Printer Cartridges In a continued effort to cut down on the amount of garbage I produce, I've been looking into getting my printer ink cartridges refilled as opposed to buying new ones. The results have been disasterous to say the least and just as wasteful because the refilled cartridges print irregularly or so faintly that I have to REPRINT my school assignments, wasting paper.
Has anyone had better luck or a better solution to this problem?

Yeah, that's my hair right now, every day since I moved to Alabama about 2 weeks ago. Well, not as bad as Monica's, but still not great. I don't know what to do about it!! My hair is wavy, and I've been reducing the number of times I shampoo it a week, which seems to help a bit. It always reaches a day, though, when I HAVE to shampoo it because it's gross. Someone suggested trying to go no poo...would that help with the humidity? I am also wondering if it would help me to shower at night. I have gotten out of the habit of doing that because I like to put stuff in my hair that helps it dry with curls, but it seems that doing that and then walking to class isn't working well. For those of you who live in humid weather, what do you do with your hair on a daily basis? Also, I don't want to put it up...I like having it down and I think it looks better this way, that's why I started putting stuff in it in the morning.

Perennial and medicinal plants for GA, USA I just relocated from RI, USA to Georgia, USA, which is quite a difference in climate! I've gone from recognizing 75% of the plants and trees where I live, and knowing which ones were good for medicine or natural dyeing, to "Um, that one's a palm tree? And that has Spanish moss on it?"
I just moved into downtown Savannah and am blessed with a teeny little garden. It's mostly overgrown with lantana at the moment. The landlord says that he chose to plant it because it's drought resistant, but that I can take it out and play with the garden as much as I want. I'm looking for web resources, SPECIFIC books, or just personal experience on what plants are best suited to this climate. I'd rather raise things that are naturally suited to the area than fight it, you know? Can anyone recommend web resources or SPECIFIC books or even know of a good nursery in the Savannah area that focus on plants like this? Native plant resources would be even cooler! ETA: I've hit up the library already to try to learn about the trees of the area to start, but at least for that subject, the only books that looked like what I wanted were not that helpful. One was too unscientific for plant ID and one was so scientific that I have to look up half the words to tell me what it's looking for and I had thought I was more familiar with plant terminolgy for most! Hence looking for specific resources of knowledge that a member might recommend.
Also, any books or personal knowledge about medicinal plants that grow wild here? I really miss being in a place where yarrow grows for free in abundance...

I sent my boys to school last year, and my daughter went to high school this year. This article is satire, but just makes me sad. I still feel a part of the home school community, because I think even when you're not home schooling, you've still got part of it in you. :)

big or small flat? Hello everybody ^_^ My fiance and I are planning to get married and are looking for a house. We live in north Italy (I in a small village, he in a small town) in a mountain area, where the house prices are insane and buying land is not an option. Given our present financial situation, we could afford a new flat with 2 bedroom and living room with no separate kitchen and hopefully a small garden beside. New flat means high energy efficiency. At the same price we could buy a 20-year old flat with 3 bedrooms, living room and separate kitchen, 2 bathrooms and some garden. 'oldish' flat means more space but the risk of renovation to be done in short time. Energetic efficiency is important for the two of us, but we plan to have children and space could become important as well. How much does space mean for 'natural living'? What about the garden? My mother presses me to choose space, my fiance's mother tells that extra space is useless.
We are also considering renting for a short time, while we make out our mind about what we really need, even if everyone here thinks that renting is like wasting one's money.
Any advice? Thank you in advance.

What are some natural ways to clear my head? Just last month I got my first tension headache. The throbbing headache lasted seven days. I am exercising, eating whole foods and also taking frequent warm baths to try to unwind (quit drinking coffee/espresso). Yet I cannot for the life of me relax.
I have always been high strung. In the most difficult situations exercise has helped me. As of late nothing helps. I have heart palpitations every night. I feel like committing social suicide and just hide under a rock for a few years. I know this might be depression and has a lot to do with my job. Regardless I have to stick with this job till the end of next year. This is the first job I have been stable and had a ‘future’.
I already have plans on seeing the doctor next month. But before then what are some natural options for me? I really do not want to take medication. Maybe I am lacking vitamins? Is there a miracle oil to chill me out? Pep talking to myself is not working any longer.

Iowa Anyone in Iowa. Specifically Cedar Falls? I'm probably moving there next month and my main worries are that A) I will have no friends to relate to B) I will have a hard time feeding my kids and finding them a doctor who will put up with me C) that they won't have activities to do and D) that I won't be able to practice as a doula. It would be great to know there are others on my level in the area. X posted
